Organization Profile, Capacity & Achievements

Women & Children Development International (WCI) is a registered, solutions-driven nonprofit organization in Nigeria, dedicated to addressing the health and socio-economic challenges faced by women, girls, and children in underserved and disadvantaged populations across the states. The organization mobilizes resources through donor funding, private philanthropic contributions, and partnerships with government institutions, national and international stakeholders, community and women leaders, as well as CSOs, CBOs, FBOs, and affected communities to design and implement systematic solutions that tackle poverty, hunger, poor health outcomes, low literacy, disease outbreaks, gender inequality, insurgencies, communal conflict, and climate change crises.

WCI commenced operations in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, led large-scale mobilization of women and girls for vaccine uptake in Kano State, including routine immunization for children, ANC & PNC. The organization successfully dispelled rumors fueling vaccine hesitancy and worked closely with the Ministry of Health to strengthen herd immunity among women and girls. WCI has its headquarters in Kano State and field offices in Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Borno, Bauchi, and Jigawa States.

In 2023, WCI partnered with SUBEB, Jigawa State, to train 373 primary school teachers on Digital Literacy for Rural Teachers, promoting effective teaching and learning for 8,382 rural schoolchildren. In 2024, with a six-month grant from the Rotary Club, WCI implemented a School-WASH project in Dass LGA, Bauchi State, to improve children’s hygiene and sanitation and curb the spread of Lassa Fever. Between December 2024 and March 2025, and with support from the Lions Club Nigeria, WCI implemented a Digital Empowerment for Rural School Students project, equipping 199 girls and 122 boys with digital literacy skills.

In February 2025, WCI received a four-month grant from the British Council to economically empower 2,317 vulnerable women and girls, including persons living with HIV/AIDS, those with disabilities, and widows in Sabongari, Nassarawa, Rano, Garu Mallam, and Wudil LGAs of Kano State. The project also integrated community-based Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention and sensitization campaigns, reduced stigma, and engaged policymakers to advocate for inclusive policies that promote the economic empowerment and social protection of this vulnerable population. WCI is currently partnering with Malaria Consortium & Nigerian Red Cross Society to mobilize women and children for the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) and Child Immunization campaign in Jigawa & Kebbi States. In addition, WCI collaborates with Close the Gap International (Belgium) to provide sustainable digital training and employment opportunities for girls and youth in Kano State.

Mission Statement: WCI works to bring together researchers, CSOs, CBOs, FBOs, community members, and government bodies to design, rigorously evaluate, and refine solutions that are not only sustainable but impactful. The organization ensures that the evidence generated through these efforts is used to improve the lives of vulnerable women, girls, and children, particularly in areas most affected by health crises, socio-economic instability, gender inequality, hunger, and poverty, by addressing the root causes.

Core Focus Areas:

 

    1. Women & Children’s Health and Nutrition Wellbeing:

* WCI focuses on addressing healthcare challenges unique to women and children, providing solutions for maternal and child health, malnutrition, routine immunization, disease prevention, and access to essential healthcare services in underserved communities & crisis-affected areas. 

 

    • Food Security, Climate Smart Agriculture & Socio-economic Empowerment:

* The organization works to improve the socio-economic conditions of women and children by creating opportunities for rural agricultural development, vocational training, livelihood strengthening, promote climate resilience building and social support in marginalized & crisis communities.

 

    • Crisis Response and Recovery:

*WCI designs interventions that respond to crises such as natural disasters, insurgencies, climate change, and outbreaks of disease, ensuring that the affected populations receive critical support and long-term recovery solutions.

 

    • Strengthening and Promoting Universal Basic Education for All Children:

*Women & Children International (WCI) is committed to promoting inclusive education for underserved children, particularly those in rural communities and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. We strive to ensure that every child, regardless of their socio-economic background, race, or the challenges they face, have access to quality education in a supportive and conducive environment.

 

    • Peace Building and Conflict Mitigation:

*WCI is dedicated to peacebuilding and conflict mitigation in regions affected by violence, insurgency, and instability. The organization works to create peaceful environments where women and children can thrive, focusing on long-term solutions that address the root causes of conflict.

6. Promoting Women and Children’s Access to Clean Drinking Water, Hygiene Education, and Sanitation:

*Access to clean water, proper hygiene, and sanitation is a fundamental human right and a major focus of WCI’s interventions. WCI is committed to improving the health and well-being of women and children by addressing water and sanitation challenges in underserved communities & IDP camps.

    7. Promotion of Disability Inclusion Programming and Empowerment:

*WCI is committed to disability inclusion, ensuring that children and women with disabilities are given equal opportunities to thrive. This includes removing barriers to participation in education, healthcare, and economic activities.

WCI Aims and Objectives

WCI seeks to address the health and socio-economic challenges (hunger, poverty, diseases & lack of access to education) faced by women, girls, and children in underserved and disadvantaged populations globally. The organization mobilizes resources from donors, private donations and collaborate with government institutions, national and international stakeholders, community and women leaders, as well as CSOs, CBOs, FBOs, and affected communities to design and implement systematic solutions that tackle poverty, hunger, poor health outcomes, low literacy, disease outbreaks, gender inequality, insurgencies, communal conflict, and climate change crises.

Specifically, the organization ought to achieve the following:

1. Advancing Women & Children’s Health and Well-being Toward Reducing Maternal and Child Mortality and Disease Outbreaks

WCI aims to improve the health and nutrition of women and children, with a specific focus on reducing maternal and child mortality rates. The organization addresses critical health challenges, such as malnutrition, access to maternal healthcare, and disease prevention, to ensure healthier outcomes for vulnerable populations. Key strategies include:

 

    • Providing access to maternal and child health-nutrition services.

    • Implementing programs to combat malnutrition and support pregnant & breastfeeding mothers.

    • Strengthening health systems to prevent and control disease outbreaks, such as malaria, measles, cholera, diarrhea, etc.

    • Educating communities on preventive health measures and safe childbirth practices.

2. Advancing Children’s Education, Young Women, Adolescent Girls’ Literacy Levels
WCI seeks to promote children’s education and literacy rates among young women, and adolescent girls, particularly in underserved areas and conflict zones. Education is a powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty, and WCI strives to provide inclusive, quality education. The objectives include:

 

    • Enhancing access to primary & vocational education for children and girls in both communities & IDP camps.

    • Providing gender-sensitive education programs that address the specific needs of young women and girls.

    • Supporting literacy campaigns and after-school programs to improve educational outcomes.

    • Encouraging community involvement and support for the education of girls and children.

3. Advancing Women & Adolescent Girls’ Food Security& Sustainable Means of Livelihood Against Hunger and Poverty

WCI works to improve the economic empowerment of women and girls, ensuring that they have consistent access to nutritious food. Addressing job & food insecurity is vital for the overall economic well-being of women, girls & children. Key objectives include:

 

    • Promoting sustainable agricultural practices, financial inclusion, and vocational education to enhance food security.

    • Building community-based food systems/empowerment programs to reduce dependence on external aid and promote long-term food security.

4. Advancing Gender Equality, Disability Inclusion, and the Roles of Women in Decision-Making
WCI is dedicated to promoting gender equality and disability inclusion, ensuring that women and girls are empowered to participate fully in society. A core objective is to elevate the role of women and girls in decision-making processes at all levels. This includes:

 

    • Advocating for women’s rights and their equal participation in governance and leadership roles.

    • Promoting inclusive policies and practices that provide equal opportunities for women, girls, and individuals with disabilities.

    • Encouraging community-based efforts to dismantle cultural and social barriers to gender equality.

    • Empowering women and girls (most especially, the people living with disability) through education, economic opportunities, and leadership training.

5. Advancing Women and Children’s Access to Clean Drinking Water, Hygiene Education, and Sanitation

Access to clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene education is fundamental to the well-being of women and children. WCI aims to reduce waterborne diseases and improve public health through sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives. Key objectives include:

 

    • Expanding access to clean drinking water in underserved communities, particularly in rural areas and crisis zones.

    • Implementing hygiene education programs to teach communities about handwashing, sanitation practices, and safe water use.

    • Building or improving sanitation facilities such as latrines and waste disposal systems.

    • Promoting water conservation and sustainable water management in the face of climate challenges.

6. Building Women and Youth Resilience Against Climate Change & Natural Disasters

WCI is committed to enhancing the resilience of women and youth in the face of climate change and natural disasters. With Africa being particularly vulnerable to climate-related crises, the organization focuses on equipping communities to adapt to environmental challenges. Key objectives include:

 

    • Strengthening disaster preparedness and response mechanisms, particularly for women and children.

    • Implementing climate-smart agricultural practices to ensure food security and livelihood resilience.

    • Supporting women and youth in adopting sustainable environmental practices and renewable energy solutions.

    • Providing training and resources to help communities recover and rebuild after natural disasters and climate shocks.

7. Advancing Research and Data-Driven Decision Making for the Uplifting of the Wellbeing of Women & Children

WCI emphasizes the importance of evidence-based solutions and data-driven decision-making to improve the lives of women and children. The organization seeks to advance research and use data to develop, evaluate, and refine interventions. Key objectives include:

 

    • Conducting research on the most pressing health, education, and socio-economic issues facing women and children.

    • Collaborating with academic institutions, policymakers, and local communities to gather and analyze data.

    • Using research findings to advocate for policy changes that support women’s and children’s well-being.

    • Continuously monitoring and evaluating WCI’s programs to ensure they are effective and impactful.

Key Challenges Addressing:

 

    • Inaccessibility to Quality Maternal & Child Health: Collaborate with government, development partners, and community to strengthening the primary healthcare system against vaccine preventable disease and outbreaks.

    • Basic Education Crisis: Addressing low/poor education in the underserved communities and IDP camps

    • Inequality: Advocating the rights of women & welfare of the people living with disability.

    • Food Insecurity, Livelihood, & Climate Change Crisis: Enhancing agriculture productivity and addressing the effects of climate change, such as droughts and floods, and improving the resilience of affected communities.

    • Insurgency, Banditry & Conflict: Offering humanitarian aid, promoting peace-building efforts, and partnership to rebuilding community infrastructure in conflict zones.

    • Natural Disasters: Developing emergency response plans and long-term recovery strategies.

    • Digital Poverty:  Collaborates with international partners to provide literacy to rural girls & youth and promote inclusive digital economy of the Federal Government of Nigeria
